The Prototyp Festival was founded in 2014 with the aim of connecting the worlds of art, science, and technology. By merging areas that may seem distant and unrelated, it creates an annual November event for a wide spectrum of visitors. Over the past nine years, the festival has grown into a staple of Brno’s autumn cultural season, continually expanding and evolving through collaboration with numerous South Moravian institutions and companies.

2025

The eleventh edition of Festival Prototyp confirmed its position as one of the most distinctive cultural events in Brno. From October 9–12, 2025, the iconic Water Reservoirs at Žlutý kopec came alive with dozens of light, interactive, and multimedia installations from around the world. Once again, the festival was completely sold out, captivating visitors with its atmosphere and diversity of experiences.

Among the highlights were Visual Bird Sounds by Andy Thomas, Moon River by Richard Loskot, Light Art by Alex Dowis, and Laser Harp by Leo Bettinelli. The outdoor space featured the luminous installation FOR PEACE! by the Slovak collective sedemminut, as well as a special phone booth allowing visitors to send a light message into the sky.

This year, the festival expanded beyond the underground — into the Brno Observatory and Planetarium, hosting immersive fulldome projections connecting art, science, and technology, and into KUMST, where the Speaking AIArt conference and creative workshops for children and adults took place. A highlight of the opening evening was a fashion performance by Klára Židková and Nataliya Grimberg,

Festival Prototyp 2025 once again proved that art, light, and technology can be not only visually striking but also deeply relevant — reflecting today’s ecological, social, and technological challenges while inspiring new ways of seeing and creating.

2024

The Prototyp Festival, which connects art, science, and technology, celebrated its tenth edition this year. From October 24 to 27, 2024, it returned for the third time to the unique Water Reservoirs at Žlutý kopec, which for four days transformed into a pulsating gallery of light and sound. For the first time, the traditional autumn event also expanded into the adjacent park, offering visitors even more space for exploration and inspiration.

The anniversary edition welcomed nearly twenty artists from the Czech Republic and abroad. Among the exhibitors were Berlin-based AUSGANG studio, Slovak artist Pavol Truben, and Polish creators Marta Ciołkowska and Katarzyna Tretyn. The exhibition also featured works from the Czech new media art scene, providing a comprehensive look at current trends in this dynamic artistic field.

2024 – SPRING EDITION

This time, the Prototyp Festival (March 22–24, 2024) appeared in its unconventional spring form, as part of the reopening of the newly reconstructed reservoirs at Žlutý kopec. The historic reservoirs were turned into a living gallery, where lights, sounds, and colors animated the underground spaces. During special tours, visitors could explore the reservoirs in an unusual way — through breathtaking audiovisual shows and large-scale atmospheric projections referencing the theme of water and engaging directly with the space itself.

2022

Once again, technology, science, and art came together at the Prototyp Festival. The opening and accompanying program took place from October 14 to 16 at the creative hub KUMST, while the artistic exhibition later led visitors into the depths of Brno’s reservoirs at Žlutý kopec in November.

The opening evening featured a fashion performance by Eco-textile Design students, and Himalayan Dalai Lama returned to the Prototyp stage after years — this time accompanied by Terézia Kovalová. The weekend continued with lectures and a multimedia exhibition by TIM students, building on the HUMAIN AI conference.

2021

The festival of art, science, and technology once again filled Pavilion A of the Brno Exhibition Centre, showcasing the work of both students and professional artists. Over three days, more than 7,000 visitors attended an unconventional combination of exhibition, party, and conference. Exhibits included digital sculptures, a “talking” urinal, a chattering ball of aluminum foil, immersive virtual reality, as well as audiovisual shows, a mobile digital workshop, and lectures on creative industries.

2019

The festival opened on Friday, October 18, with an unconventional fashion performance, audiovisual show, and DJ Floex. Throughout the weekend (October 19–20), the program continued with thematic workshops, lectures, and the Mini Maker Faire. The artistic exhibition featured, for example, 3D-printed sculptures by Tomáš Medek and Pavla Nikitina, along with projects exploring artificial intelligence, augmented, and virtual reality.

A novelty this year was the Prototyp MAKERS program on Saturday and Sunday, a fair for all makers and technology enthusiasts. Open workshops such as FabLab Brno, HobbyLab, and strojLAB from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at BUT (Brno University of Technology) took part.

2017

The fourth edition of the festival took place in Brno’s Market Hall at Zelný trh and at the Old Town Hall, where the exhibition of interactive artworks spread across several rooms. Videomapping, Friday’s opening party, and a fashion show were not to be missed. Saturday was devoted to workshops, and Sunday to expert lectures and guided tours of the exhibition.

2016

From November 11 to 13, 2016, the former prison (“Káznice”) filled with artistic exhibits inspired by natural elements. Water, fire, earth, and air were reflected in interactive projections and videomapping.

Friday’s program was packed with live music performances and a fashion show — traditionally part of Friday’s schedule, presented by the Severa + Collective brand. There was also live VJing by the KinocirKus collective. VIDA! science centre, Bioskop, Corinth, and the “Four Elements” workshop provided entertainment for the whole family. On Saturday, visitors could explore the exhibition and try out a range of workshops. Sunday was dedicated to meetings with installation creators and engaging lectures — including how to create a vertical garden, when it pays to prototype a product with 3D printing, or how architects grapple with the visual nature of fire protection in buildings.

2015

In 2015, Prototyp explored the theme Play of Space in a three-day festival held from November 13 to 15. The event took place in the newly opened lower section of “Malá Amerika” in Brno. The program was structured into three distinct parts, offering experiences for children, general audiences, and experts alike.

2014

The very first edition took place in 2014 in the beautiful industrial space of Brno’s Adam Gallery. The event featured 17 light artworks and live performances, attracting more than 1,800 visitors. Everyone who attended Prototyp could enjoy the exhibition of light works much like in a classic museum, but were also engaged by interactive installations, themed refreshments, and, of course, the evening’s main program. On stage shone Ardor Viridis, David Vrbík playing a laser string, and Jiří Suchánek. The cherry on top was a light fashion show, symbolically closing the entire festival. The night concluded with an afterparty featuring DJs.
