After the terrorist attack in which two people died in Bratislava’s Teplárna on October 12, 2022, there is silence and darkness on Slovak television screens.
Enter the installation.
Two huge televisions in the middle of an empty black space.
Two perspectives: illusion and reality.
Voices of LGBTIQ+ people.
Black point.
Shot. You watch and understand, even without explanatory text.
But still.
On one of the screens you see an unidentifiable colored flag (it’s an illusion) that puts you in a state of illusion.
It’s enough – to concentrate on the black dot for 15 seconds and then just look at the white area (into the light of hope).
What happens will depend only on you. On the second screen, you will see the rainbow flag in its true form and truth.
Exactly as she is and exactly how. queer people exist and belong among us. After 15 seconds of concentration on the black dot, “something” happens again. The video installation switches to an empty black silent screen, just as our hearts remained empty after the incident at the Teplárna, where everyone was supposed to feel safe.
Ema Šútovcová is a student at the University of Fine Arts in Bratislava, Department of Intermedia. In his work, he deals with various forms of installation. He works with different media, always trying new things and techniques. He is currently researching the technique of carpet production, its context and significance in a socio-cultural environment. He approaches his work precisely and holistically. It is based on extensive research interwoven with research and exploration, the result of which is the definition of a theme and the subsequent response by creating a work. He considers the most important part of his work to be the collection of material and immaterial material, a kind of “libretto” of the author’s work.
