Nexus is a spatial installation where art and technology merge within the calm setting of a water reservoir. A set of precisely controlled laser modules creates a dynamic light choreography: beams converge into a single radiant point — the “nexus.” This collective act becomes an image of the power of synchronization: both as a metaphor for shared focus and as a reference to safety in airspace. One of the sources of inspiration is Arthur C. Clarke’s short story A Slight Case of Sunstroke, which explores the principle of concentrated light and collective action.
In the spirit of DIY culture, Nexus combines custom-built hardware and open technologies. The construction uses 3D-printed components, a microcomputer, and PID control for fast and stable target alignment, resulting in a smooth, almost choreographed system response in real time. The installation balances between artistic gesture and engineering — between the precision of an experiment and the intuitive perception of space.
Michal Pustějovský (*1984) is a graduate of the New Media Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague; he also studied at the Berlin University of the Arts (UDK) and the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem. His work explores the concept of space-time in today’s world and its visualization through art.
His minimalist installations connect references to quantum theory with the tradition of fine art techniques and often engage with developmental design. He works with custom-built mechanisms, open technologies, and digital code, consistently employing repetition, cyclicality, and the reduction of phenomena.
