Protist Rhapsody is an immersive full-dome film that translates the evolving behaviour of a digital life form into a cinematic vision.
Inside a vast virtual petri dish shaped by invisible swirling currents of nutrients, an emergent organism — inspired by the slime mold Physarum polycephalum — wrestles with the pull of its programmed instincts and the shifting forces of a responsive, ever-changing environment. Its form reconfigures in turbulent cycles of Birth, Destruction, and Resurrection that echo the rhythms of nature’s chemistry and humanity’s oldest myths.
Created with Uncharted Limbo’s bespoke generative system, the film fuses scientific simulation with immersive visual storytelling, reflecting on the fragile balance between individuality and adaptation, the inner pulse of life and the pressures of the world beyond. The organic soundscape — crafted in collaboration with composer and sound designer Elias Aronidis — earned Protist Rhapsody the Best Sound-Driven Work award at SAT Fest 2024.
Uncharted Limbo is an award-winning collective of Creative Coders and New Media Artists exploring the edges of Science, Technology & Performing Arts.
The core team — George Adamopoulos, Eleana Polychronaki, and Chris Waters — brings together backgrounds in architecture, computational design, software development, and visual effects.
Inspired by natural phenomena, biological systems, and the dynamics of the human body, the collective reflects on the societal implications of technology. They harness advances in computer graphics and software engineering to build immersive worlds where digital matter and artificial life forms meet human presence.
Their craft is rooted in the Greek word “Technē”: powerful art cannot exist without exquisite technique. They design their own algorithmic and visual tools, letting them shape their ideas as much as their artistic vision pushes technology forward.
Their practice spans many forms: responsive visuals for live performance, experimental film and music videos, interactive exhibitions, VR environments, and full-dome shows. Collaborating with composers, choreographers, theatre and film directors, and scientists, they seek out projects where disciplines collide and expand one another.
Uncharted Limbo’s work has been presented by leading cultural institutions worldwide, including the BFI Film Festival, Sadler’s Wells Theatre, the Victoria & Albert Museum, SAT Montreal, and the Onassis Stegi Theatre, and broadcast on ARTE European Culture TV. Recipients of the S+T+ARTS AIR European grant, they are actively exploring the nexus of Performing Arts and Artificial Neural Networks. In 2024, the collective gained international recognition with Spreadbeats — the first music video coded and experienced entirely in Excel. The project won top honors including the Cannes Lions Grand Prix for Digital Craft, the ADC Black Cube (Best of Show), and the D&AD Black Pencil, among others.
