Stone and Lightning

Sabína Falcmanová

Stone and Lightning is the name of the installation, which is made up of two objects placed in a mutual spatial dialogue. The title of the work does not refer only to the materials, but especially to the character duality, which in Taoist symbolism is designated as yin and yang.

While stone as a material is a symbol of constancy, when changes in its shape and structure occur due to natural processes for thousands and millions of years, Lightning – neon, refers to electrical energy, technologies that develop at a tremendous pace.
While stone embodies continuity and tradition, lightning responds to this with innovation and progress. While stone is a symbol of passivity and acceptance of changes based on environmental influences, Lightning is a symbol of action and quickly changing situations.
Individual objects are examples of the clash of these two contrasting principles.

Sabina Falcmanová is a graduate of the glass studio at UMPRUM, where she also completed a one-year internship in Jiří Černický’s painting studio. She comes from northern Bohemia, a region known for its glassmaking, which has greatly influenced her artistic focus and, more specifically, the themes she explores in her work.
Sabina is very inspired by the simplicity and yet enormous power of prehistoric artistic expressions, as well as nature in its extreme form (brownfields, new wilderness, elements or natural disasters).
Sabina likes to apply her unquenchable curiosity and desire for adventure in her work, which is why she works with often little-explored, sometimes bizarre materials (molten basalt, oil, tree resin…). She also likes to try new techniques.
The author is interested in both the creation of smaller objects, which are often the first step in exploring new material, and the creation of installations that have the potential to draw the viewer into a certain atmosphere and thus spark the curiosity for exploring the offered topic more closely.
